Sunday Night Blues
Do you have them? The Sunday Night Blues where you dread going to bed because you know it brings Monday morning? I used to have them.
When I joined SpinWeb as their marketing intern, President and CEO Michael Reynolds explained to me their office is a ROWE - Results-Only Work Environment. He gave me a book called "Why Work Sucks and How To Fix It," by Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson. The book is brilliant and insightful and addresses many issues that are wrong with a traditional work environment. But mostly, it's thought-provoking. I started analyzing my own work habits and you know what? I drive to work, clock in, sit down and fire up my laptop, which I just turned off to make my commute to the office, only to sit down and do the same thing I was doing, from the comfort of my own home, twenty minutes ago. Does being present at work make me work harder? No. Do I have access to all the resources I need from home? Yes. I know there are days when I'm sitting in the office wishing I could take a mental break by watching an episode of Scrubs, but I trudge on.
Not long after I read "Why Work Sucks," I came across an interesting article on Utah's switch to a four day work week. The program, called Working 4-Utah, extended state government service hours from 7a.m to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, allowing employees to have a three day weekend in exchange for four ten-hour shifts. Three day weekend? Sign me up! The program boasts a reduction in energy by 13 percent, as well as a decrease in health complaints and fewer sick days by employees.
As an intern, I don't have a full work load, but my experience within a ROWE has been excellent. I have the freedom to work at my discretion, which goes well with my busy schedule. If I'm feeling bogged down, I can exercise, grab lunch with a friend and yes, watch a Scrubs episode to get that coveted mental break.
It seems obvious to me our traditional work environment is broken. Here are two alternatives which have been proven to reduce employee complaints, increase productivity, reduce commute time, save energy and eventually cure those Sunday Night Blues. I'm not saying it's going to be easy to make the transition, but the results speak for themselves.
